Is fall a good time to visit the “Big Apple” that is New York City? My answer is almost always the same: the time is now! The crisp air, theater season, and amazing local fall flavors come alive in a city known for a fruit of the fall.
Once Labor Day passes, summer humidity gives way to crisp, walkable days in the 50s and 60s temperature ranges. That range makes Central Park, the High Line, and the Brooklyn Bridge feel effortless. By late October, the park’s foliage turns into a genuine spectacle, rivaling pretty much any New England postcard. While everyone heads off to New England, you can find yourself escaping to New York City where the summer tourists have left and the autumn tourists are further north.
Broadway’s season kicks off, and the Met Opera and New York Philharmonic open their seasons as well. Art Gallery openings pick up pace after a quiet summer. If you are a collector, this opens up the opportunity to be some of the first to explore. This is also harvest season for the restaurant scene, with tasting menus built around apples, squash, and wild game. You will find plenty of local restaurants serving up the freshest of autumn ingredients with a bit of a twist. Why not have an apple in the Big Apple during apple season? Did we say apples enough, and why are we suddenly hungry?
September and October sit in a real shoulder season for hotels. It’s after the summer family rush and before the holiday-market crush. Often times there is availability at the properties I book most, from Central Park suites to boutique hotels downtown. The luxury stays really stand out, with amazing service. It’s what we do here at CARTE ATLAS, find the luxury hotels that are just right for you.
The answer is that fall pairs the most comfortable walking weather of the year with golden Central Park foliage, a full relaunch of Broadway and the city’s arts calendar, and noticeably better hotels than the holiday season that follows. We hope you enjoy the benefits of travel on your next trip and the many more to come!
For a taste of a New York holiday without the chaos, I like to suggest Autumn before the truly heavy crowds arrive. Autumn gives you the version of New York that photographs beautifully and moves at a pace you can enjoy. Ready to plan your luxury trip the city of New York?
