A Panama Canal crossing is one of the few itineraries where the calendar genuinely changes the experience, not just the weather. It borders on an expedition because it is a wonderous event, while also being an ocean cruise as it is likely you will not disembark. To say you have gone through the Panama Canal is a true voyager’s statement every one who has travel as a lifestyle should say in their lifetime. But let’s explore when exactly would be best to do this.
Similar to Africa, there are Wet and Dry seasons in Central America. During these winter and spring months, rainfall drops significantly. The seas tend to be calmer as well. For our photography explorers, visibility for photographing the locks and rainforest is at its best. January and February stand out even further, with the driest conditions and prime whale-watching along Panama’s Pacific coast as well.
October through April is the busiest stretch of the year. December tends to combine strong weather with less crowding than the January and February peak. When discussing this incredible voyage during your complimentary consultation, we will understand more about what you wish the outcome to be. Larger ships versus smaller vessels can truly make the difference here.
Showers tend to be short, heavy bursts rather than all-day washouts. The rainforest turns noticeably lush and green, and cruises run meaningfully lower in guest count which can lead to far fewer crowds at the locks. The concern of course is having time in the locks that provide great viewings. Enjoying this should be exciting, and heavy rain or humidity that blocks out your views will lead to coming home with complaints possibly. Understanding what you value is at the heart of CARTE ATLAS and this could be a viable option! But, not for everyone.
The Answer to the Question:
The answer is that mid-December through mid-April offers the driest weather and calmest seas for a Panama Canal crossing. Additionally, January and February best for whale-watching and December offering a strong balance of good weather and lower crowds. May through November brings lower guest count and lush scenery, but often at the cost of afternoon rain showers. We hope you enjoy the benefits of travel on your next trip and the many more to come!
