Japan is having its biggest tourism moment in decades. Record crowds now fill Tokyo streets, Kyoto temples, and Hokkaido resorts. A handful of forces are converging to fuel this surge. Here is why Japan has become 2026’s top trending destination.
The yen traded near 162 to the US dollar in July 2026. That is close to a 40-year low against the dollar. A weak yen turns Japan into one of the world’s best-value luxury destinations. Hotels, dining, and shopping all feel more affordable to foreign visitors. There is uncertainty on how long this will last. This has caused an influx of tourists to pursue Japan on their bucket lists.
Japan welcomed a record 10.68 million visitors in the first quarter of 2026. March alone brought 3.62 million arrivals, a monthly record. The Japan National Tourism Organization reported 42.7 million visitors for all of 2025. Momentum has only accelerated since.
Chinese arrivals fell 55.9% in March amid diplomatic tensions. Other markets quickly stepped in to fill the gap. South Korea, Taiwan, and the Middle East all posted double-digit growth. Malaysia, India, and Mexico each grew by 30% or more. This is creating a diverse array of travelers to the country. With travel from Asia and North America, without China, opens up doors to discovery and conversation worth pursuing.
Foreign visitors spent 9.5 trillion yen in Japan during 2025. Tokyo’s government now targets 60 million annual visitors by 2030. Popular sites and peak-season hotels are booking faster than ever. Timing and access now matter more than ever before.
