Antarctica cannot be visited year-round like most destinations. Ships only reach the continent during its brief summer season. Wildlife, weather, and crowds all shift from month to month. Here is when to visit Antarctica and what each month offers.
The season opens in early November each year. Fresh snow still blankets the landscape at this point. Elephant seals and penguins gather for dramatic courtship rituals. Pack ice breaks into massive, photogenic floes offshore.
December brings longer days and the season’s first penguin chicks. Humpback whales and orcas return to hunt nearby waters. January ranks as Antarctica’s warmest month, with highs near 40°F. Nearly endless daylight allows maximum time for shore excursions.
Pack ice reaches its lowest point of the year in February. That opens remote coves and coastlines otherwise hard to reach. Whales feed heavily before their long migration north. Mild temperatures make this a comfortable window to travel.
March brings shorter days and cooling temperatures across the peninsula. Sunrises and sunsets turn pink, orange, and gold each evening. Whales take their final feeding stops before heading north. Crowds thin out as the season winds toward its close.
