Any lover of castles, fairy tales, wine and history will have a Rhine River Cruise as a travel desire. Which does beg the question, why does one river have so many castles? The answer starts nearly a thousand years ago.

The Rhine was Europe’s busiest trade route for centuries. Merchants moved wine, salt, and grain along its banks. Local lords realized they could tax every boat that passed. Each ruler built a castle to enforce that toll, and rivals built their own castles nearby to compete. That rivalry is why over forty castles still line one narrow stretch.

The Rhine Gorge between Koblenz and Bingen earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2002. Steep vineyard terraces climb the hillsides on both banks, and half-timbered villages sit tucked beneath castle walls. River cruise ships glide through slowly, giving guests time to take it all in.

Marksburg Castle near Braubach has never been destroyed or rebuilt. Rheinstein Castle sits dramatically on a cliff above the water, and Pfalzgrafenstein looks like a small stone ship anchored mid-river. A knowledgeable guide brings that history to life on shore excursions.
Germany is at the heart of the Rhine as it flows past cities like Cologne. France is also a country that shares the river with Germany, with the city of Strasbourg sitting beautifully along its banks. The Netherlands also has the final flow of the river as it empties into the North Sea and the plentiful canals of both the Netherlands and Belgium. Switzerland sits on the opposite end, and often can be a part of the journey as well as Italy with visits to places like Lake Como after your river cruise.

A river cruise lets you see every castle without driving between them. You unpack once and wake up in a new town each morning, and meals and transportation are handled so you can focus on the scenery. That ease is why the Rhine remains one of the most requested river cruises we book.
The answer is that medieval lords built castle after castle along the Rhine to tax river trade, defend their land, and outdo rival lords next door. A little competition really went a long way! We hope you enjoy the benefits of travel on your next trip and the many more to come!
